Manchester City, also known as the Citizens are a football club that requires no introduction. But many of their fans are still in a state of confusion – they do not know how many Premier League titles Man City have won.
The Manchester-based establishment instils tremble in the minds of their rival fans, mainly because of their modern dominance of the English Premier League under the tutelage of manager Pep Guardiola. In fact, their dominance is one of the reasons why Man City is hated by rival fans.
But how many Premier League titles have Man City won? To put it straight, City have won 7 Premier League Titles. Remember that Premier League rebranded in 1992 and since then they’ve won 7 league titles. However, before the Premier League era, City have won 2 League titles. Altogether, Man City have won the English League title 9 times.
Again, you may wonder; how did they win it and in what seasons?
Premier League Titles That Man City Have Won
Here, I’ll highlight all Premier League titles that Man City have won before and after the Premier League era. In addition, how they won the league in each of the seasons will be explained.
1. 2022/2023 Season
The 2022/23 season Premier League win for Man City clinched their 7th title since the league was rebranded in 1992.
Manchester City opened the new season with a 2-0 away win against West Ham United, thanks to a double, one in either half from Erling Haaland. The Citizens then went on to pick 11 points in the next 5 league games scoring 18 goals in the process.
By mid-January in 2023, City uncharacteristically were trailing Arsenal FC by 8 points. But as the title race intensified, Arsenal became weary and even lost twice to City including a 4-1 thumping. While Arsenal’s form began to dip by early February, City displayed incredible resilience by winning 13 of their final 14 League games in the run-up to winning the Premier League title in a typically dominant way.
Ultimately a 1-0 defeat to Brentford was not going to derail the Citizens, as Guardiola’s men already secured the EPL title a few games prior.

2. 2021/2022 Season
Guardiola’s men began the 2021/2022 season with an away loss to Tottenham Hotspur, as a 55th-minute effort by Son Heung Min was enough to pocket all three points for the London outfit. Manchester City then went on to bag 13 points from their subsequent 5 league games, scoring 12 goals in the process while conceding none.
City ended up clinching the title in a dramatic fashion. In the season finale, Mohamed Salah put second-place, Liverpool, in front against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 84th minute, which would have taken the Reds into first place had City not mounted a comeback at the Etihad Stadium. Andy Robertson then sealed Liverpool’s 3-1 win.
Ikay Gundogan and Rodri probably have immortalized themselves in the hearts of fans as they both started and completed the comeback for Manchester City after going 2-0 down against Aston Villa.

3. 2020/2021 Season
Manchester City won the 2020/2021 EPL title in what was the third in 4 years since Guardiola took charge. The Citizens started the new season with a 3-1 away win against Wolves thanks to goals from Kevin Debryune, Gabriel Jesus, and Phil Foden. The abysmal display of City on the 27th of September 2020 ruined their good start to the season as the Citizens lost 5-2 to Leicester City at home.
Subsequent draws against Leeds United and Westham United began to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of fans. A 1-1 draw with Liverpool and a 2-0 loss to Spurs in November of 2020 probably watered the seeds of doubt already established in their fandom. But the poor form ended abruptly after a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion.
A stunning 21-game victory streak in all competitions followed, including 15 consecutive Premier League victories, to build a 12-point advantage at the top of the league – before the run came to an end in March with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Manchester City started the season with a 4-0 home win against Swansea, thanks to a double from Sergio Aguero, and one goal apiece from Edin Dzeko and David Silva. The Citizens went on to collect 13 points from their proceeding 5 games, scoring 15 goals along the way.
City looked destined to miss out on the title as they trailed 2-1 at home to relegation-threatened QPR after 90 minutes on May 13, 2012. Pablo Zabaleta gave Roberto Mancini’s men the lead six minutes before half-time but the Londoners battled back through Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie bringing the score line to 2-1.
City needed a miracle and a miracle they got; Dzeko’s header in the 92nd minute and Aguero’s last-ditch finish were enough to secure the citizens their first EPL title since 1967/68 in a thrilling fashion.
That 2011/12 season produced one of the most dramatic ends to a football season. Because Manchester United waited with bated breath at Sunderland to see if their win was enough, but Aguero’s 94th-minute goal triggered scenes of total bedlam in the stadium.
Now 10 years on, Aguero’s goal has been immortalised in the form of a statue outside the Etihad Stadium. And why not?

Manchester City won their second League title in the 1967/68 season. The season started with City securing just 1 point in their first 3 league games. But whatever pessimism looming at the start of the season was quickly dispelled as the citizens went on to win all five league games that ensued, scoring 16 goals in the process. A 100% record in the final 4 games of the season secured a two-point lead over second-place Manchester United.

Final Thought
So, if you are asked again; how many Premier League titles have Man City Won? The simple answer is 7. However, before the PL era, they won the league twice. Hence, City have won the English League title a total of 9 times.
It is fair to say that Manchester City have rather struggled before the 2000s. But things started to look rosy for the sky-blue establishment when Sheik Mansour took over in 2008.
And this is evident by the 7 EPL titles they have won since the said takeover in 2008 when compared to the 2 they won in the whole of the 90s. In total, the Citizens have 9 topflight League titles to their name.
And with the backing of a seemingly willing sugar daddy, it would be unwise to think that they won’t be adding more in the future.
Interesting piece, very informative and could come in handy in times of football banter 😅🙃
