Record Breaking Stats in AFCON
1.) Record Number of Medals
Nigeria has the highest number of medals (gold, silver, bronze) in the competition’s history. With a record-breaking 15 medals in total, they are ahead of Egypt (13) and Ghana (10). If the Nigerians place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in this year’s competition, they will be extending that record. Which would not be surprising with the quality they possess in attack.
2.) Total Goals Scored in a Single Tournament
The 2008 edition saw 99 goals scored, which is the most in the competition’s history. There were 32 matches played amongst 16 teams with Egypt emerging triumphant. This was the second of the three consecutive titles Egypt won between 2006 and 2010. We would be hoping for a lot of goals in the 2024 tournament, maybe even more than we had in the 2008 tournament. Fingers crossed.

3.) Competition Debutant
The tournament has barely started and it is already a record-breaking tournament because it is the first AFCON since the inaugural tournament without a debutant country. Each edition since then has had at least one competition debutant and in the 1972 edition, there were 4 debutants. Whilst this might not be the most positive record, we do hope the 2024 AFCON produces more positive records.
Conclusions
The 2024 AFCON promises a lot with the number of stars and the improved quality of football across Africa. We have Morocco coming off making the World Cup semis in 2022 the defending champions in Senegal, and the hosts The Ivory Coast as the front runners for the competition.
Hopefully, this edition of AFCON will produce more record breaking stats.
