The roles of a football club chairman vary. Although it may be seen by most football fans as just planning and running meetings for the club, it is way more than that.

One of the most important individuals in a football club is the chairman because he directs the club towards great achievements. Below are the roles a football club chairman performs at their respective clubs.

10 Roles Of A Football Club Chairman

1. Decision Making

The key role of a chairman is to make strategic decisions for the good of the club. These decisions help to shape the club’s future and could also make or break the club. Good decision-making is more than just a role of the chairman but more of a quality which he must possess. These decisions to be taken include the appointment of the team’s coach, making financial investments, and expanding the stadium.

2. Representation

The chairman represents the club during meetings, events and forums to external stakeholders, sponsors and the media. This is very important as it can attract investors who might want to invest in the club. As representatives, they serve as the public face of the club and thus keep a good image of the club while maintaining the club’s values and reputation.

3. Financial Responsibility

The chairman oversees the financial well-being of the club. He is responsible for every financial decision made and works with other stakeholders/investors to ensure the club’s financial stability. These relationships can bring about sponsorships and commercial partnerships for revenue which most football clubs heavily rely on. They negotiate contracts, sponsorship deals, advertising partnerships and stadium naming rights to support the club’s financial and operational needs.

6. Supporting The Manager

Although the chairman is not directly responsible for the daily football activities, they often work closely with the club’s manager. Provision of support, guidance and resources to the manager is a key role the club chairman performs especially in matters related to transfers, player contracts and overall team strategy.

7. Crisis Management

Crises occur in the world of football but it is the duty of the chairman to carry out swift actions to resolve it. The chairman works closely with the board of directors, ensuring effective governance and decision-making processes. They may host board meetings, facilitate discussions and ensure that the board operates in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.

9. Long-Term Planning

In as much as the immediate good performance on the pitch is important, the club chairman must also plan for the performance in the long run. This had to do with building a sustainable foundation, setting achievable goals and ensuring the club’s legacy for future generations of fans.

Club chairmen are to be accountable for their actions and decisions made towards the club.
